Maudgalyayana is a venerable figure in Buddhism, endowed with magical powers. His mother, having committed numerous sins, suffered in the hungry ghost realm in hell after her death. Maudgalyayana endeavoured to save her, seeking assistance from the Buddha. The Buddha could only advise Maudgalyayana to hold a Ullambana ceremony, making offerings to monks from all directions, and have the various gods and Bodhisattvas perform rites. Maudgalyayana followed the Buddha's instructions and was finally able to save his mother, thereby also helping to liberate the parents of others. From this, the fifteenth day of the seventh month in the lunar calendar became the Ullambana Festival, also known as the Ullambana Dharma assembly in Buddhism. Later, this evolved into the Festival of the Hungry Ghosts.
