Why Do Buddhist Prayer Beads Have 108 Beads?

Buddhist Prayer Beads

A familiar Buddhist mala contains 108 counting buddhist prayer beads. One traditional explanation connects this number with 108 mental afflictions: patterns such as craving, resentment, and confusion that contribute to suffering.

These experiences are familiar across beliefs. We may replay an insult, cling to something we cannot keep, or want more even when we already have enough.

A Christian might loosely relate this to examining desires and temptations, although Buddhist afflictions are not identical to Christian sin. A freethinker might understand them as troublesome patterns of thought and emotion.

How the (Buddhist Prayer Beads) Number Is Explained

One symbolic calculation begins with six faculties: sight, hearing, smell, taste, bodily sensation, and mind.

Mind is included because thoughts and memories are also part of experience.

Step

Calculation

Six faculties, each with pleasant, unpleasant, or neutral feelings

6 × 3 = 18

Six faculties, each with liking, disliking, or indifference

6 × 3 = 18

Combine the two sets

18 + 18 = 36

Apply them to past, present, and future

36 × 3 = 108

Imagine hearing criticism. You hear the words, feel hurt, and react with dislike. Later, you remember the exchange or worry about another one. The calculation illustrates how experience and reaction become entangled across time.

A Symbol of the Work Ahead

This is religious symbolism, rather than a scientific inventory of exactly 108 emotions. It is also one explanation among several.

Completing a round of beads does not automatically remove 108 problems. The number represents the scope of the mental habits that practice seeks to address.

Each bead offers a fresh opportunity to return attention to the practice and gradually become more aware of those habits.
