蹇 (Jian) is a hexagram from the I Ching meaning “Obstruction” or “Difficulty.”It describes a situation where progress is blocked—not to stop you, but to redirect you.
What does 蹇 (Jian) teach us in life?
蹇 (Jian) teaches that adversity is not punishment, but refinement.
When the path forward is blocked, it is often a signal to pause, reassess, and strengthen oneself rather than forcing progress.
What is the deeper symbolism of 蹇 (Jian)?
Obstacles as teachers – resistance reveals hidden weaknesses and strengths
Change of direction – when forward movement fails, sideways or inward movement succeeds
Inner cultivation – growth happens before results appear
Timing over force – wisdom lies in knowing when not to push
Why is 蹇 (Jian) relevant today?
In times of pressure, burnout, uncertainty, or stalled plans, 蹇 (Jian) reminds us that:
Not all delays are failures
Some blocks exist to prevent greater loss
Adaptation creates long-term breakthroughs
What feels like being stuck may actually be life protecting and reshaping you.
Key takeaway
When the path is blocked, strengthen the person walking it.
What is this about?
This Gua describes the Zhou's difficulties at the beginning of the revolution against the Shang.
Data
39.0 利西南。不利東北。利見大人。貞吉
It is advantageous in the southwest (Zhou) and disadvantageous in the northeast (Shang). Therefore, it is beneficial to see the great man. Here, 'great man' refers to King Wen, a figure of wisdom and leadership. You are facing a difficult period. Seek guidance and assistance from a trusted friend, counsellor, or lawyer. This person will help lighten a strenuous situation, ending the difficulty. Please do not attempt to figure it out on your own.
39.1 初六往蹇,來譽
Yin on Line 1: To advance will bring difficulties. To wait will get fame. Take action at the appropriate time. When it is not suitable to move (find a new job or mate, ask for a raise or promotion), wait patiently, and you will see positive results. Do not act hastily.
39.2 六二王臣蹇蹇。匪躬之故
Yin on Line 2: When the kin^ is in danger, the officials should try to save him at the expense of their own lives. Being loyal to your country (or marriage) and its leader (your mate) is essential. Even if you must suffer, remain true to your country's founding principles (wedding vows).
39.3 九三往蹇,來反 [卜病不死.]
Yang on Line 3: To advance will bring difficulties. Waiting will reverse the situation. King Wen waited three years to launch his attack against the tyrant Shang King. Bide your time. The appropriate opportunity will come. Although your problem isn't bright now, there will be light at the end of the tunnel only if you wait.
39.4 六四往蹇,來連
Yin on Line 4: To advance will bring difficulties. It is beneficial to form alliances before striking. When your workload is overwhelming, it is advantageous to ask for help. Find a partner, nanny, housekeeper, or assistant. Being a martyr invites frustration and possible failure. In romance, seek advice from those you trust before you become committed.
39.5 九五大蹇,朋來
Yang on Line 5: In deep trouble, his friends rescue him. If you have proven yourself worthy, respectful, and sincere, your friends/associates will come to your aid. Don't be afraid to ask them for help.
39.6 上六往蹇;來碩吉。利見大人
Yin on Line 6: To advance will bring difficulties. Staying behind will result in an outstanding achievement. It is advantageous to see the great man. You are not yet prepared to proceed with your plan (a cause, marriage, project). It would be best if you first met your advisor/ mentor/ leader, who can assess your situation, hone your ideas, and help present your plan.
